Hypothyroidism, wherein the thyroid gland produces an inadequate amount of thyroid hormone, is a common disorder, particularly in women of childbearing age. Hypothyroidism of the mother during pregnancy may result in developmental delay in the child. Treatment of hypothyroidism requires thyroid hormone medication.
