Hormones

Hormones are chemical messengers that are secreted directly into the blood, which carries them to organs and tissues of the body to exert their functions. There are many types of hormones that act on different aspects of bodily functions and processes. Hormones are secreted from the endocrine glands in the body. The glands are ductless, so hormones are secreted directly into the blood stream rather than by way of ducts. Hormone disorders are diagnosed in the laboratory as well as by clinical appearance and features. Laboratory tests can be used to test bodily fluids such as the blood, urine or saliva for hormone abnormalities.

Fetoscopy

Fetoscopy is a surgical procedure in which a tiny telescopic camera is introduced into the uterus and the amniotic sac through a small incision in the mother’s abdomen. The camera is inserted under ultrasound guidance and is only 1-2 mm in width. Once the camera is inserted, the surgeon can see the fetus, the placenta and the inside of the womb on a television screen. Fetoscopies can be done for a wide range of conditions. The more common indications are twin-twin transfusion syndrome, severe congenital diaphragmatic hernia or lower urinary tract obstruction. The main risks of fetoscopy are breaking the water early and preterm delivery.

Low Birth Weight

Low birthweight is when a baby is born weighing less than 5 pounds, 8 ounces. Some babies with low birthweight are healthy, even though they’re small. But being low birthweight can cause serious health problems for some babies. A baby with low birthweight may have trouble eating, gaining weight and fighting off infections. Some low-birthweight babies may have long-term health problems, too. Babies with low birthweight look much smaller than other babies of normal birthweight. A low birthweight baby’s head may appear to be bigger than the rest of the body, and he or she often looks thin with little body fat.

Perinatal Death

A perinatal death is a fetal death or an early neonatal death. The perinatal mortality rate is calculated as: perinatal deaths / total births x 1000. A stillbirth is the death of a fetus weighing 500g or more, or of 22-weeks gestation or more if weight is unavailable. An early neonatal death is the death of a live newborn in the first 7 days of life. Great variation exists both between and within countries on how the stillbirth component of perinatal mortality is recorded, particularly for early stillbirths that occur at 22- to 27-weeks gestation.

Hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism occurs when your body doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland that sits at the front of your neck. It releases hormones to help your body regulate and use energy. Hypothyroidism may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Over time, untreated hypothyroidism can cause a number of health problems, such as obesity, joint pain, infertility and heart disease.

Fetal Complications

Fetal complications of pregnancy include birth defects, genetic problems, growth problems, and problems due to maternal antibodies. Accurate diagnosis allows us to initiate treatment during pregnancy and to prepare to treat the newborn at delivery. In many cases, ongoing pregnancy monitoring allows us to prepare a baby for early delivery, and to decide the best timing for delivery of a baby who is compromised.
